Mac Miller's grandmother joined fans mourning the late rapper in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, park that inspired his debut album on Tuesday night (11Sep18).
The hip-hop star was found dead at his home in California on Friday at the age of 26, and fans in his hometown of Pittsburgh mourned his shock death by heading to a public vigil held at Blue Slide Park, a playground area inside the city's Frick Park that inspired the title of his 2011 debut album.
They were joined by Mac's grandmother Marcia Weiss, who wore a Blue Slide Park sweatshirt and thanked everyone for coming along to remember her grandson. Pam Surano, a reporter with local TV station KDKA shared pictures of Weiss hugging fans.
She wrote, "A Pittsburgh moment! Mac Miller’s Grandma comes to thank the huge crowd at the memorial vigil for her famous grandson stopping to take hugs."
One social media user wrote that she gave a speech that left her "heart in pieces", according to USA Today.
The vigil, organised by local record label Nightfall Records, was attended by more than 1,000 fans, who lit candles and laid flowers and tributes around the slide, which had been given a fresh coat of blue paint by Pittsburgh Public Works following the rapper's death.
Another memorial was set up in the park, with hundreds of fans gathering around a tribute display featuring pictures of Miller, real name Malcolm James McCormick, music notes, candles and other works of art.
Fans have also set up a petition calling for the playground area of Frick Park to be renamed "Mac Miller Blue Slide Park" to honour the star, while The Blast reports that MTV bosses are planning to air reruns of his reality TV show Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family, which was originally broadcast between 2012 and 2014.
