Celine Dion's partner and longtime manager Rene Angelil died after falling out his bed, and his body was found by a nurse.

The My Heart Will Go On singer was thrown into mourning when her husband passed away in January (16), aged 73, after a battle with cancer.

Rene had hoped Celine would be there when he passed, but she was away singing the night he fell out of bed and died, and she didn't realise what had happened until the following day because she hadn't wanted to disturb him when she returned home.

"Rene wanted to die in my arms but, alas, I was singing that night," she told a Paris Match magazine. "He must have wanted to get up and he fell on the floor...

"Normally, after my show when he had taken his last medications, I gave him a kiss, tucking him in and sent him off to sleep. That evening I didn't want to wake him. It was the nurse who found him the next day. Distraught, she came to find me. I went into the room."

Celine, 48, was "haunted" by the thought that Rene may have hurt himself in the fall, but she was relieved when the doctor told her he hadn't suffered "any fracture or wound or bleed".

"I called the doctor, who I had to comfort, saying, 'Rene won't suffer any more, it's better this way,'" she added. She also recalled giving Rene her dressing gown and placing a stuffed toy with a big heart he had once given her under his head while telling him "not to worry about the kids".

Celine and Rene married in 1994 and had three sons together, Rene-Charles, Nelson and Eddy.

Rene-Charles surprised his mother on Sunday (22May16) by presenting her with the Icon Award at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, causing her to break down in tears while on stage.
