Ariana Grande knows what it's like to have her heart "broken" by mean comments.

The 21-year-old star is one of the hottest singers on the planet at the moment thanks to her catchy music, including hit singles Love Me Harder and Problem featuring rapper Iggy Azalea.

She is spoilt for choice when it comes to who she chooses to hang around with now, but her ability to see past cliques at school has put things into perspective for the star.

"I was in every group. I suppose I was a bit of a nerd, but I also had a good group of friends, too," she explained to ASOS magazine. "I knew what it was like to be popular, but I also knew what it was like to have my heart broken by bullies."

She remains close to her childhood pals, citing friends Alexa, Aaron and Tyler as the people who keep her "grounded and happy".

And being a keen cook means Ariana is always whipping up tasty meals for her buddies, with her favourite dish quinoa and kale sautéed in teriyaki sauce with cashew nuts and avocado.

Her fame has seen her build new friendships too, with fellow musicians. Rapper Nicki Minaj is one of them after the pair collaborated on track Bang Bang alongside Brit pop sensation Jessie J. It was a thrill for Ariana to get to work with one of her idols.

"I'm a huge fan of Nicki, I have been for years. The coolest part of working with her was not only getting to make Bang Bang together, but also getting to know her," Ariana gushed. "She's a nice person and so determined. A true professional."

She may be currently loved up with Big Sean, but that didn't stop the brunette beauty revealing Jim Carrey was her first ever celebrity crush.

"I loved him," she laughed.
