D’Angelo’s sudden release ‘Black Messiah; has debuted at no 5 in the USA.
This is not the normal time of year for a big new release. Most companies aim for October or November for the maximum time to sell new sets before Christmas Day.
That’s not the case this year as D’Angelo surprised the world with only the third studio album of his twenty year recording career. Black Messiah opens at number 5 and, although it doesn’t equal his last album, 2000’s Voodoo, which went to number 1, it is an impressive feat for an album that was released with no advance notice and a minimum amount of promotion.
The balance of the top veteran albums for the week stay relatively static. Garth Brooks moves 10 to 9 with Man Against Machine and AC/DC drops 5 to 10 with Rock or Bust. For the third week, Barbra Streisand inches up a single position, going from 16 to 15 this week with Partners.
Gov’t Mule’s Dark Side of the Mule premiers at 99, their first album to fail to make the top 50 since 2007’s Mighty High. Since then, they have released three other albums including their last, 2013’s Shout!, which started at 32.
