David Duchovny has found recording music a “journey of discovery”.
The 54-year-old is best known for his acting roles in shows like The X-Files and Californication. But the star is about to release his debut album, Hell or Highwater and will be hitting the road to perform the tracks live.
“I'm learning what it's like to sing with a live band, how close to be to the mic, learning about singing, period," he told USA Today. "It's a journey of discovery for me. I hope that I get to discover certain things before the audience does, so it's not too painful."
David releases his record on May 12 and he wrote all 12 songs on the album. While many debut singers struggle to have their music heard, the star is in a more privileged position because of his already established profile.
“I'm lucky enough to be able to book some really great TV spots and get exposure that a normal new artist, which is what I guess I am in this field, wouldn't be able to get," he admitted.
David sought inspiration from a variety of places, and one song, Positively Madison Avenue, even came about after watching Bob Dylan's commercial for Chrysler which premiered during the Super Bowl. The actor is a big fan of the famous singer, and hopes that the 73-year-old will be flattered by the track.
“My nightmare would be that Bob hears the song and is insulted and cares to respond," he added. "Because I lose."
David has a busy time coming up, with it recently being announced that The X-Files would return for six episodes. He starts shooting in June, which will give him a month to perform the album live, if there’s demand for it.
“All I know is I've been trying to make [series creator] Chris Carter use my music," he said. "I never could do that before."
