Selena Gomez has felt every emotion with her life playing out in the media.

The 23-year-old singer has been in the spotlight since she was as child after appearing in Barney & Friends. As an adult, her on-off-relationship with Justin Bieber led to a lot of press attention and Selena admits the scrutiny has played with her emotions.

“I’ve lived such a public life that I understand that I’m under a microscope,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “That has taken me into so many different phases. It’s made me depressed and it’s made me happy and it’s made me grateful and humble—but [I’ve learned] it’s okay to let down my walls with my music, to feel sexy and good.”

Selena has channelled her feelings and experiences into her new album, Revival. The result is her most confident sounding record yet, a bonus considering Selena used to feel self-conscious about her musical offerings.

“I was always insecure with my speaking voice because it’s so low,” she explained. “I never felt like it was feminine-sounding. I didn’t know it would be such an asset to who I am now, though. It adds a cool, personal quality. It’s exciting.”

Selena also thought back to the albums she listened to growing up for inspiration. She tried to incorporate the sounds of these LPs into the new music.

“I grew up with Britney and *NSYNC and Janet and all those people,” she added. “I would buy the copy, read the thank yous, and I felt like I knew them. Christina [Aguilera]’s Stripped was one of my favourites. What I loved about Revival is that it felt like there was a fluid story.”
