Lorde is proud to have a "pretty fearsome reputation".

The singer may be just 18 years old, but she's already become a household name in the world of music thanks to her unique vocals and brooding songs.

She's also become known as someone who speaks their mind, previously sharing her opinions on female stars like Miley Cyrus who dress provocatively.

So when her label executives suggested taking over her Twitter account, Lorde was quick to dismiss the idea in order to stay true to her outspoken nature.

"Teenagers are such a discerning group of people. They'll immediately sniff out anything that feels contrived. I'm constantly scanning myself to see if I'm some corporate executive version of a teenager," she explained to British magazine Elle.

"I've developed a pretty fearsome reputation. People know that if they talk down to me, I'll roll my eyes. It's something people my age have grown up with. You can go on any young person's Tumblr in the world and see people marketing themselves. Everyone my age is like that now. We're all hyper-aware of how we're being seen."

And her personality has positive effects, with Lorde revealing people have thanked her for making them feel more confident when speaking their minds. It's an "amazing" feeling for the star to know that people look up to her.

She released her debut album Heroine in 2013, after her parents let her take three months off school; a decision which made the world of difference.

"The way record labels work is they want you to release at a certain time. Like, people buy all their records leading up to Christmas, then they don't buy anything," she noted. "So the fourth quarter is where the record labels want to artists to be, and if I wanted to do it, I had to make it in that middle patch. Otherwise it wouldn't have come out until, like, January 2014."
