Sam Smith admits he had plenty of “dodgy one-night stands” in the past.

The 22-year-old Stay with Me singer, who recently split from model Jonathan Zeizel after dating for two months, pens a lot of songs about love and heartache.

And Sam confesses he came across a number of bizarre people in his pursuit of romance over the years.

"I had a lot of one-night stands," he told Rolling Stone magazine. "I met a few dodgy friends, people I'm definitely not friends with now.

"I fell in love with a straight guy last year, and he didn't love me back. I got trapped in my own mind."

Sam revealed he came out of the closet with his homosexuality after a classmate approached him at the age of 13 and asked if he was gay.

He lived most of his school years being open about his attraction to the same sex, but confidence didn’t stop him from being bullied.

"[My classmate] was like, I don’t want to share my eraser with a gay man… P***k. I hope he’s reading this. [Another time, I was with my dad and] someone drove by and yelled ‘f****t’. I was just embarrassed that my dad had to see that, because I could only imagine how you feel as a parent," he noted. "You just want to kill them. I was always embarrassed for the people around me. It never actually deeply affected me. You just ignore it, you know?"

But some people really supported Sam.

The star fell in love with an older straight man at his school and sent him a heartfelt letter confessing to his passion. The boy wrote him a letter back noting he loves Sam as a friend, but had no romantic feelings.
After the exchange they became good mates.

"It makes me emotional, actually," Sam said. "He looked out for me for the rest of school. He just made sure that if anyone took the p**s out of me, he would stick up for me. He could have made it hell for me."
