U2 have released a new, stripped down, version of Every Breaking Wave from their album Songs of Innocence.

The band had previously said that Every Breaking Wave was meant to be the first single from a planned album called Songs of Ascent that they were recording back in 2009. They performed the tune at three of the shows during that tour but, when they went back in the studio in 2013, the recorded a new version of Wave with a totally reworked chorus melody.

When Songs of Innocence was released via the iTunes promotion, the song The Miracle (of Joey Ramone) was the first single put out but it failed to make an impact on the major charts around the world. Every Breaking Wave was put out as the second single in December but there is hope that this new version might catch on with radio programmers and the public.
