The 57th Ivor Novello Awards was presented - again - by Paul Gambaccini, you’d think he'd be sick of it after 25 years, apparently not, and thank God for that!
We were lucky that he shared the stage with so many musical luminaries, such as Adele who picked up her first award for 'Music Most Performed Work'. To be fair she had a 50% chance on this one as she was nominated twice but ‘Rolling In The Deep’ rightly stormed it.
“Thanks for telling me to put it out first [she nodded to her table] I just thought people wouldn’t like it.” An impossible thought now clearly.
The predicted clean sweep was abruptly intercepted by the young, fresh and vibrant Ed Sheeran winning ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ and dealt another blow with ‘Album Award’ going to PJ Harvey for ‘Let England Shake’.
Take That were in town (minus Jason) to pick up ‘PRS for Music Outstanding Contribution to British Music’ with the award for most honest speech of the night all Marc Owen’s:
“Sometimes I was embarrassed to say I was in Take That, sometimes I was proud,” as the 1000+ audience gasped he continued “come on you’ve just seen those videos.”
‘Songwriter of the Year’ went to Adele:
“On my first album like a dickhead I read all the reviews, critics said my songs weren’t as good as my voice. I took note.” Fantastic!
Music-News.com also mingled with the stars, tit bits were:
Boy George stating “the new Culture Club album is out next year, as soon as I’m allowed back into America.” Oh dear we may have to wait a bit longer.
Michael Evis: “I’m off to a festival in Germany.” Good.
And coolest man of the night William Orbit declared “Madonna gets better with age,” yeah right, but the man also turned up at Audley’s pub around the corner and chatted all night with everyone. A ledge!
Great day had by all! Roll on Gambaccini and roll in Ivor.
Many Music-news.com interviews to follow!
