Carley and Jonathan Wolf (sic) are The Ghost Wolves, are a duo from Austin, Texas who play primal garage rock with only a few drums and a guitar. Ho-hum another duo, another album of basic, bar room rock ‘n’ roll? Well, yes and no.

Opening number the earnest Shotgun Pistol Grip with the low fi, grungy guitar and urgent drum sound fits the bill. As does Gonnna Live although that does have more of a 50’s R&R about it.

Further into the album Grave Dollas and I Was Wrong are 2 minutes of nitrous oxide fuzzed up guitars. Being split by the sinister Zeppy tones of Ride the Wolf, this set is the high point of the album.

With I’m Yo Mudda the band sort of experiment with the blues, and should maybe decide if that really is an area they want to explore. Attack, Attack, Attack – a fast, but repetitive filler, and Dangerous Moves – a much more satisfying mid-paced stoner stomper, close the album.

There’s a proliferation of two piece bands with a back to basics approach to rock at the moment. What sets The Ghost Wolves apart, a bit, is that there’s a playful, bubble-gum feel about the music: that’s quite attractive…and a relief too!
