When experimental indie rock band dEUS rose to fame in 1994 with their acclaimed debut album ‘Worst Case Scenario’, no one expected them to increasingly step up the bar with their return from hiatus in 2004. Hailing from Antwerp Belgium and originally solely performing covers, the five-piece soon began to write material that would land them amongst indie’s finest, and with this collection of some of their best works dEUS showcase their intelligent song writing in a neat little bow.

The compilation kicks off with one of dEUS's brilliant if not best hits Instant Street. A relaxing summer swan song complete with emotion and groove that builds up to an epic finale. Hit after hit follows, with the funk infused The Architect from the movie Vantage Point. Constant Now, Fell Off The Floor and Slow provide a similar theme giving firm evidence of the groups Jazz influences among countless others.

Others show off the bands progressive roots, particularly the slower and darker second half of the album and the infamous Roses, bringing in heavier guitar and drum sounds. This concept of splitting the album into two halves of opposing moods makes this greatest hits more of a double concept album and is a genuinely interesting and enjoyable twist on the standard release of an artist’s best songs.

Where the band’s sound may not be exactly easy listening for the most part it certainly rewards those that stick with it through the thirty song listening marathon. Here dEUS bring in the best of their extensive catalogue and deliver it in a fascinating experience of imagination and musical wonder. A real treat for those searching for something alternative and a little experimental.
