Bobbie Jean Carter's cause of death has been revealed.

The cause of death of Backstreet Boys hitmaker Nick Carter's sister has been revealed almost two months after her death.

Bobbie Jean, who passed away in December aged 41, died of "intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine," according to an initial case summary report released by the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Department and obtained by People.

The death has been ruled as an accidental overdose.

Bobbie Jean, who appeared on the family TV show House of Carters, died at her home in Florida on 23 December.

A spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office told TMZ that Bobbie Jean was found unresponsive in her bathroom. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The news of Bobbie Jean's death came a year after her brother, singer and rapper Aaron Carter, died at the age of 34.

Aaron's cause of death was attributed to drowning in his bathtub after inhaling and ingesting drugs.

In January, Nick, 44, shared that he was "completely heartbroken" following the death of his younger sister.

"It may take a lifetime to fully process the loss my family has endured over the years - most recently, with the sudden passing of our sister Bobbie Jean," he wrote on Instagram. "I am completely heartbroken. Thank you for all your love and kind words. We are reminded again that life is precious, fleeting and to cherish the time we have with the ones we love. I know she is finally at peace with God. I love you BJ."

Bobbie Jean is survived by her eight-year-old daughter Bella, who is reportedly in the care of her grandmother Jane.
