Alicia Keys has revealed that her family prioritises communication.

In a new interview with People, the Girl on Fire hitmaker shared that her family is "big on communication".

"I love conversations - we're big on conversations. We're big on communication," the 43-year-old said. "There's definitely parameters for things, but we have to give them the ability to let them explore and let them figure out what they like. And I really take their lead in a lot of ways. I ask them, 'What do you think? What do you want? What feels right for you?' Because I think being in touch with your spirit and your intuition is a big key to life."

Alicia has two children, Egypt and Genesis, with her husband, producer Swizz Beatz, whom she married in 2010. Swizz, 45, has three children - Prince Nasir, Kasseem Jr and Nicole - from previous relationships.

"If you don't know what you think or what you feel, it's going to be hard for you," Alicia continued. "I feel like I've spent a lot of time not fully understanding or not trusting what I felt, and so I want to teach them to trust their instincts."

During the interview, Alicia noted that her kids are "really smart".

"We're doing really good, and they're really smart. They're really independent," she told the outlet of her sons. "I really love watching them grow."
