St. Vincent has opened up about releasing music as a private person.
The singer/guitarist has revealed that, as someone who keeps her life private, she believes that once her music is released to the public, it is no longer about the artist.
"Once the music is out in the world and people are hearing it, it's not about me anymore," she explained in an interview with People. "It's really, really, really not. It's about their experience."
St. Vincent continued, "My favourite records, I don't care what the artist was going through. My favourite song, I'm like, 'I love this song. This song is uniquely for me.'"
The Melting of the Sun singer, real name Annie Clark, went on to explain that music is for the listeners to relate to.
"I know that's delusional, but that's the beauty of music fandom, where you're like, 'This thing that someone else made yesterday or 50 years ago means so much to me and my life and is exactly how I feel. I'm selfish, it's mine,'" she told the outlet.
The 41-year-old continued, "Once it's in the world, it's for you. It's not for me. That's not some highfalutin stance so that I can be reclusive. That's genuinely how I feel."
St. Vincent recently released her seventh studio album, titled All Born Screaming.
