Shania Twain has declared her ex-husband deserves "empathy and understanding".

Robert "Mutt" Lange cheated on the singer with her former best friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud for 15 years, from 1993 until he and Shania separated in 2008.

Now, Shania says, she will never forget what her ex did, but she has been able to offer "empathy and understanding to him.

"Forgiveness is in the family of letting go. But forgiveness, more specifically for me anyway, is not about forgetting necessarily. It's about understanding the other person, and that might mean that they're wrong," Shania, 58, told the Great Company podcast.

"Maybe you believe forever that whatever they did was wrong. Or maybe you believe that... it's very hard to hate or not be able to forgive somebody that you believe 'He's a human being that deserves empathy and understanding'."

In the wake of their marriage breakdown, Shania became closer with Marie-Anne's husband Frédéric Thiébaud, 54, and married him with months of her own divorce being finalised.

Shania added she now feels sad for Robert, 75, that he behaved the way he did.

"So, do I hate my ex-husband for making a mistake? No. It's his mistake. Not my mistake," she said.

"Sad for him that he made such a great mistake that he has to live with."
