Headie One joins Dotty on Apple Music 1 to discuss his new album The Last One, reflecting on his past, his ambitions for the album and more.

British rapper Headie One joins Dotty on Apple Music 1 to talk about his new album ‘The Last One’, out this week. He talks about reflecting on his past and what he’s learned about himself since releasing his debut record ‘EDNA.’ Headie also discusses the meaning of ‘The Last One’ and his ambition for the album as well as what motivates him and what he aspires to be.

Headie One discusses knowing when to release his new album ‘The Last One’...

I just felt like I was in that creative space. I had loads of music. I was working a lot without releasing. I released a few stuff, but not at the same rate/speed at which I usually release, so I just had loads to talk about and loads of music. It depends on what phase I'm really in, but I do spend a lot of time in the studio. And then it's just a feeling that I get when I just know, there's a certain energy that's building when I know it's time to release an album.

Headie One talks what he’s learned about himself since releasing ‘EDNA’...

Just growing up a bit more recently. I learned a lot of stuff about obviously being a musician. You know in the beginning when you are doing music, it's like you're still crossing over, getting used to the new normal. But obviously now it's just normal now.

Headie One talks about reflecting on his past on the album…

I think it's actually a decision that I consciously made because I feel like it was needed. For me to have a look on what I was doing from the outside and analyse it properly, that was what was needed for me to progress and take steps forward. That's basically similar to what I was saying before when I was doing music I was crossing over into being a musician. But now that's become the new normal, I'm analysing it from that side of things.

Headie One talks what motivates him and his aspirations…

The desire to keep growing as an individual and as a musician, because that was the plan from the start to be the best I could be at what I'm doing. It was never about the money from the start. So that's why I can just always keep going because the target can always get bigger and you can always aspire to be higher. There's no height, for me anyway. I feel like I'm still breaking certain boundaries. I've never done a world tour. I've never toured in certain parts of the world. I just got my Australian visa, so I'm going to be touring there for the first time. I've never been to the United States of America. Never. There's a whole world out there.

Headie One talks the meaning of ‘The Last One’…

It's 'cause I'm looking at things a bit different on the project, and I feel like I'm letting go of a lot of things when I'm making the albums. I'm speaking on the things that was happening before and actually deciding to just wash my hands of it, certain ways of thinking, and then deciding to move forward and actually accept what is done then. 'Cause I feel like a lot of the time when you're transitioning into music, you're walking a line a lot of the time, with a lot of the ways that you think, a lot of things that still happen. And it's hard to accept that you are where you are. I feel like I'm reaching my space where I need to just accept it now, that I'm doing the music. It's not the last album.

Headie One talks the ambition for ‘The Last One’...

I just want to tell people the truth. And I feel like we get a lot of music nowadays, it's just like people ain't really being honest with people. Or they're just having fun, and it's making it all about fun. But me, I like to just say things how it really is through the music and just tell people what it is, whether they like it or not. Just got to hear it.
