Emotional Snoop Dogg praises ‘big brother’ and ‘mentor’ Dr DRE for teaching him professionalism and to ‘always look forward’ 30 years on from ‘Gin and Juice’

RB: “We really love the idea of friendship and longevity in friendship as well. Snoop, for you, what has this relationship, friendship taught you on life in general?”

SD: “It taught me how to be professional. Because Dr. DRE has like always been a big brother, a mentor. But he taught me professionalism as far as how to separate from the hood and how to, you know, get on a business venture, and just look forward and not really pay attention to wants behind you. He’s always had the attitude and spirit of ‘I don’t care about what I’ve made, it’s all about what I’m about to make.’ And that’s a good spirit that I’ve taken from him that I don’t even know how many albums I’ve made since I started, but it’s always about what’s next, what’s best. And just being with him, he’s like a big brother, protector. I just love being with him in the studio and in real life.”

SM: “That is lovely! Snoop, I think you’ve kind of said it already, but what is the best thing about working together?”

SD: “He’s in control. And I say that, and I really mean that, because outside of Dr. DRE, I’m like the boss; I’m the one who has to call the shots at creating, make sure and all this. It’s demanding when you have to do it all and be it all. When I’m with him, I can just be an artist, I can just be Snoop Dogg.”

DD: “Yeah, Snoop can get in the passenger seat when he’s with me, and he’s real comfortable. And you know, it takes a massive amount of trust to be in this position to let somebody like Snoop and his calibre trust me with his s***. You know what I mean? That mean’s I can f*** up. I love being in that seat, and I love that he gives me that trust with his career, and I’m never going to let my bro down.”

RB: “And what’s the most difficult thing? Like, can you always reach each other at every single time?”

SD: “No. The most difficult thing is that we have a tug of war. Its small things, but it’s always what’s best. You know what I’m saying? So that at the end of the day, we don’t ever like be mad, it’s just about what’s best. And I’m still learning, you know what I’m saying? So, it’s like, as you learn, you think you know it all, but then again you want advice, and you want protection and that’s what he’s always been for me.”

Dr. DRE reveals that a ‘disappointing’ blind date led him and Snoop Dogg to make hip-hop classic ‘Nuthin’ but a G Thang’

SM: “You guys have been friends, colleagues, partners for a very long time. Have you got a standout moment from your friendship? I’m going to ask you first, DRE.”

DD: “A standout moment? Inside or outside of the studio?”

SM: “Either. Maybe both.”

RB: “Let’s go both.”

DD: “You got to know that we’ve been doing this thing for 30 years now, so we have eight million stories. I tell you this one story. We decided we was going on this blind date one night, and this is before FaceTime and pagers and all of that. So we decided to go on this date, and for some reason when we got there, this girl opened the door and she was beautiful. And I thought it was mine and it wasn’t. And Snoop pushed me out the way like, ‘Nah, cus, that’s me.’ And yeah, when I turned that corner and saw mine, I was really disappointed. So, I’ll just leave it at, that but that really sticks out. But we drove for like an hour in Hurricane Katrina to get there. And I was extremely disappointed, but the good part about that is when we left that situation, the next day we went to the studio and made ‘Nuthin' but a G Thang.’”

SM: “Oh wow!”

DD: “I think that was the song we made.”

SD: “Yes sir.”

DD: “So it worked out.”

SM: “It worked out very well!”

Snoop Dogg and Dr. DRE reveal their soft spot for Brixton Academy crowd for ‘embracing them’ nearly three decades after first UK show

RB: “How’s London treating you?”

DD: “We love London. It’s always a fantastic time. I’m not just saying that, we always have a great time.”

SD: “We really love, like, Brixton Academy. You know, we like the hood, like East London. Because that’s when we first came out here, they like really embraced us. So, it was like we always wanted to make sure that we, you know, kept our hands on this UK bridge over here.”

DD: “Yeah, my first time performing here was in Brixton. Brixton Academy, yeah. Years and years ago with N.W.A.”

SM: “First time performing in the UK?”

SD: “With Dr. DRE? We were there, Brixton Academy. Shabba Ranks was with us that night we came out here. That was my first time ever coming out here, and I didn’t know there was that many black people out here. Like, you know, what they tell us in America they only show us certain pieces of the world. So when we came out here, we went straight to the Academy and there was like…”

DD: “It was like Compton!”

SD: “It felt like the hood!”
