Sam Smith has revealed the extent of their skiing injury: "It was the worst".

The Unholy singer had to be rescued from a ski slope after they attempted to tackle a too-difficult run.

A torn anterior cruciate ligament in their knee left them immobilised for a month.

"I've been really focusing on my mental stuff for the last seven months because I actually broke my ACL," Sam told the Sidetracked podcast.

"I completely ripped my ACL. I was skiing. I was an idiot and went on a black (advanced) slope on the second day."

They went on to explain the accident left them needing to be carried down the mountain by medics.

"I got taken down in a blood bag. It was the worst. It's a permanent thing," Sam, 32, said.

"It's in between your bones and helps you jump and spring around. It completely ripped and I decided to go down the non-surgical route but I couldn't walk for a month on this leg and it was awful."

Sam added the accident was something of a wake-up call as they had never previously had an injury as serious.

"It was the first time I'd ever not been able to move and I was holding onto a bit of weight," they said. "I was very anxious. I used it as an excuse to get my s**t together."
