Elton John has celebrated 34 years of sobriety.

The iconic singer, songwriter and pianist took to Instagram on Wednesday night to mark 34 years of sobriety.

He wrote, "34 years clean and sober. My life has never been better."

The 77-year-old also shared a snap of an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) coin, which features the phrase "To thine own self be true" around the edge and the words "unity" "service" and "recovery" along the sides of a triangle. The Roman numerals for the number 34 appear inside the triangle.

The comments section of the post quickly filled up with messages of congratulations for the I'm Still Standing hitmaker.

Tennis legend Billie Jean King wrote, "So proud of you, my friend," while British actress Elizabeth Hurley wrote, "Love, love, love you."

Elton struggled with substance abuse for around 20 years, but gave up alcohol and drugs for good in 1990. He is now married to filmmaker David Furnish, with whom he has two children, Zachary and Elijah.

In an article he wrote for Variety in 2019, the Rocket Man star explained that he had to take a 12-month break from his career to focus on his sobriety.

"I don't think I would still be sober today if I hadn't taken that whole year off and thrown myself into my program of recovery," he wrote at the time. "At my peak during that year, I was going to as many as five meetings a day!"

He added, "I made and served tea at the meetings. I was determined to lock in all the things that I had learned in treatment."
