Shawn Mendes has hinted he endured a pregnancy scare with an unnamed woman.

The 26-year-old Canadian pop star is gearing up to release his fifth studio album - which he has teased will be his most personal yet.

And lead single Why Why Why has peeled back the curtains on his personal life as he sings about being unprepared for fatherhood.

The eye-opening track includes lyrics that state, "I thought I was about to be a father / Shook me to the core / I'm still a kid."

While the single does not name the woman involved, the star has had an on-off relationship with former Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello since 2019 which has reportedly been rekindled in recent months.

At the end of July, Shawn revealed that his new record - his first since the cancellation of his planned Wonder World Tour in 2022 - will be released in October.

Sharing an image of the album cover via Instagram, the singer wrote in an accompanying statement, "Music really can be medicine. 2 years ago I felt like I had absolutely no idea who I was. A year ago I couldn't step into a studio without falling into complete panic. So to be here right now with 12 beautiful finished songs feels like such a gift."

The new album, titled Shawn, will be released on 18 October through Island Records.
