Billy Ray Cyrus's ex wife Firerose has undergone a double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer.

The Australian singer was found to carry the BRCA1 gene that makes women more likely to develop the disease.

Firerose - real name Johanna Rose Hodges - has claimed she was forced to postpone the surgery when Cyrus filed for divorce 24 hours before she was due to have the operation in May.

The pop music performer took to Instagram with an image of herself lying in a hospital bed.

"With God on our side we're stronger than we can even imagine," she wrote in the caption.

"Thank you so very much for all the prayers. I deeply appreciate the outpouring of love & support."

The caption also included the hashtags #previvor #brca #brcaawareness.

The BRCA1 gene is a mutation that makes her more susceptible to developing breast and ovarian cancer and it was recommended in March by her doctor to undergo a double mastectomy.

The news comes just a few weeks after Firerose and Billy Ray's marriage finally came to an end three months after the country singer filed for divorce.

Cyrus was married to Firerose for less than a year and cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the breakdown of the marriage.
