Jessica Simpson has confirmed an "entirely real, raw" documentary series about her life and career is in production.

On Tuesday, the singer-actress announced that she has partnered with producer Van Toffler at production company Gunpowder & Sky to make the project.

"I am very humbled to team up with Gunpowder & Sky and Van Toffler, who has been a long-time collaborator and supporter of mine, to make a documentary series that is entirely real, raw and more personal than anything I have done before," she said in a statement. "In releasing my (2020) memoir, Open Book, I was moved to learn just how much people saw themselves in my story. I am ready to share a lot that has happened in my life since that book was published, including an artistic journey and return to music inspired by pain and betrayal as well as beauty and forgiveness."

Jessica promised fans she is looking forward to "reconnecting" with them in the lead-up to the release of the programme and hopes they can "inspire each other and move forward on our parallel journeys".

Meanwhile, producers insisted the project is "unlike anything she has done before" and will delve into her religious upbringing, experiences of abuse, divorce from former husband Nick Lachey, and the founding of her popular self-titled clothing brand. It will also follow the I Wanna Love You Forever hitmaker as she returns to making music.

Jessica's last album, Happy Christmas, was released back in 2010.

And Van noted that the star, who shares three children with her husband Eric Johnson, is now ready to be back in the spotlight.

"Having had the pleasure of meeting Jessica while I was at MTV - during her burgeoning music career and amidst the tempest that surrounded her during (early 2000s reality TV series) Newlyweds - I've seen her bravely wear her heart on her sleeve and punch back with unyielding honesty," the executive praised. "Her journey, like most great novels, has seen the highest peaks and profound valleys, yet through it all, she has persisted and flourished. It's a privilege to collaborate with her in telling her story."

A potential release date for the documentary has not been announced.
