Taylor Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 US elections has sparked a surge in voter registrations.

On Tuesday night, the Wildest Dreams singer stepped forward to announce her intention to vote for current Vice President Harris to take the top job in November.

She urged her social media followers and fans in the USA to do the same - and shared a custom URL which then directed people to vote.gov where they could register to vote on 5 November.

NBC News reports the General Services Administration, which monitors the voter registration website Swift shared with her fans, recorded a 337,000 surge in first-time registrations by Wednesday afternoon.

When backing Harris, the singer wrote via Instagram, "I'm voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos."

She added, "I've done my research, and I've made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first-time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered!"

In November, Americans will choose between Harris and former President Donald Trump as their next leader.
