Wretch 32 praises ‘gifted’ Little Simz for ‘trusting him’ on their collab for new single ‘Black and British’
SM: “That picture is powerful. That shot in the video, it is like regal legacy. It is big. Talk to us about Benjamin and Little Simz then. How did they get on? How did you choose them for the song? What was that ever happened?”
W32: “Even like within being in the studio and just working on music with Simz, just creating, just creating. I'm just like, ‘She's just so talented, so gifted.’ All the time when I'm in the studio, and I look at her, I always think we would make a sick picture back-to-back if our hair was interlocked. And I just never used to say it, but then when the opportunity came around, I was like, ‘Yo, I got an idea. I don't know how you're going to feel about it, but if you trust me…’ You know what I’m saying? Because you have to trust someone to do that, not anyone's just going allow you to. You know what I'm saying, you know how we are. Like, people touching your hair, let alone being intertwined. So, I was like, ‘If this looks how I can see in my head, this is going to be such an iconic shot.’ What made me more happy was when I was looking for a reference to show people, I couldn't find one. So I was like, we have to do it.”
SM: “Was she down from the jump?”
W32: “From the jump. She’s like me. When you’re working with an artist and it’s their vision, you’re just like, ‘I trust you.’ Like, provided it's nothing too crazy. Do you get I'm saying? Like, if I'm working with Ghetts, Ghetts can call me to be on his album and do one line, but I understand that in the film of what he's creating, I've just got a cameo, and it's just that, and it needs to be said like this, I understand that I trust him wholeheartedly. And luckily, she trusted me.”
Wretch 32 says that having a child made him ‘buck up his ideas’ as he reflects on his son turning 18 years old
RB: “Your son turned 18. How did that feel? Or how did 18 years ago affect the person that you are today?”
W32: “I had to buck up my ideas. Like, I knew that life wasn't about just me, and I've got someone I've got to provide for, someone that's looking up to me, you know? Someone that I'm going to have to constantly and always be there for. So that was a new journey that I was embarking on. When people ask me, ‘How old is your…’ and I say 18, even me, I feel like, ‘So how old am I?’ Like, it doesn't even feel like it adds up. Because I'm like, ‘If you're 18, that means I must be I’m an adult.’ That’s mad. Do I pay bills? Like, have I got any letters in my name? Yeah, so he’s passed his driving test as well. Mad proud of him. Even that, like, I didn't even believe him. He's like, ‘Yeah, I passed.’ I'm like, ‘You can't drive. Because, in my head, you're 10.’ You get what I'm saying? He's sending me screenshot of the thing, sent me the picture. I'm saying, ‘Nah, nah, nah, nah, but you drove the car? You drove the car?’ He's like, ‘Nah, nah, nah, yeah, I drove the car.’ Like, it doesn't even make no sense, bro. It doesn't make no sense.”
