Jessica Simpson has teased a "personal" return to music in a cryptic social media post.

Taking to Instagram earlier this week, the I Wanna Love You Forever singer uploaded several photos of her posing on a chair while wearing a white dress, furry black coat, and black thigh-high boots.

In the accompanying caption, Jessica explained that the snaps were taken inside a recording studio located in Nashville, Tennessee which was of special significance to her.

"Interviews in my Nashville music room where I unearthed my singular magic," she wrote, adding: "This comeback is personal, it's an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve."

Jessica has indicated new music is in the works for some time but is yet to confirm a release date for her tracks.

The 44-year-old's last studio album, Happy Christmas, was unveiled in 2010.

And in response to the mysterious post, many followers questioned whether Jessica's marriage to former sportsman Eric Johnson is in trouble.

"Is this j simp saying she's single? (sic)," one fan wrote, while another added: "Yep, called this a while ago. We love you. Stay strong."

Representatives for Jessica have not yet addressed the speculation.

But on Monday night, the fashion entrepreneur's younger sister Ashlee Simpson was asked about the rumours by a TMZ cameraman.

"Do you know anything about it? Is that true?" the reporter asked, to which she simply replied: "No."

Jessica and Eric wed in 2014 and are parents to daughters Maxwell, 12, and Birdie, five, and son Ace, 11.
