Cher has revealed that her ex-boyfriend Gene Simmons declared his love for her after their first date.

The music legend has opened up about her relationship with the KISS musician, who she dated for a couple of years in the late '70s.

In her new memoir, Cher: The Memoir, Part One, Cher explained that she first met Gene at an event for former U.S. President Gerald Ford, where she mistook him for British actress Jean Simmons.

Despite the confusion, the Believe hitmaker admitted she was "impressed" by the rock singer by the end of the evening.

Gene drove Cher home after the event and the following night they went on a date to see rock band The Tubes, where he allegedly flirted with the Burlesque star and her friend.

Cher went on to recall receiving an apologetic phone call from Gene the following day, but clarified that she was not interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with him.

However, the I Got You Babe singer confessed that Gene later travelled to Japan, where he was saddled with a $2,800 (£2,200) phone bill because they spoke so often on the phone.

"That's when he blurted out that he loved me," Cher, 78, wrote, reports People. "We hadn't even kissed. We'd only been out once before he left. What is it with these men?"

Cher began dating Gene shortly after the breakdown of her marriage to singer-songwriter Gregg Allman.

Gene later left the Strong Enough singer for Diana Ross.

Cher: The Memoir, Part One is now available to buy. The second volume is due for release in 2025.
