Elton John has confirmed that fans can expect to hear new music in the near future.

The Rocket Man hitmaker has assured fans that he is still feeling creatively inspired and has been working on new songs at his own pace, despite his ongoing eyesight issues.

"You will be getting some more (music)," he said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night. "The juices have never dried up. They never want to dry up because I'm always looking to create things. It's just having the space now to do it at my own time. Of course there will be new Elton John music."

The 77-year-old revealed in September that a severe eye infection he contracted in July while on holiday in France had left him blind in his right eye and with "only limited vision" in his left.

However, Elton revealed earlier this month during a gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada Musical, for which he wrote the lyrics, that he had lost his sight altogether.

"Now, I have lost my sight and I haven't been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed listening to it," he told the crowd.

Elton, who retired from touring last year, appeared on the chat show with Brandi Carlile to discuss their collaboration Never Too Late, the theme song for his new documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late.

The track was shortlisted for the Best Original Song Academy Award on Tuesday alongside 14 other tunes vying for a nomination.

Other shortlisted songs included Pharrell Williams' Piece by Piece from the documentary of the same name, Robbie Williams's Forbidden Road from the biopic Better Man, Kiss the Sky by Maren Morris for animated film The Wild Robot, and Harper And Will Go West by Kristen Wiig for the documentary Will & Harper.
