Julian Lennon has undergone emergency surgery after being diagnosed with skin cancer.

The English musician-photographer, the son of late Beatles member John Lennon, took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a series of "disturbing" images showing a lesion and stitches on his arm.

In the accompanying caption, Julian recalled how he had been travelling to New York City for a press tour to promote his new book Life's Fragile Moments earlier this month, when he received a call from Dr. Tess Mauricio confirming that he had a melanoma on his skin.

The dermatologist recommended he make an appointment with Dr. Tim Neavin immediately, and the surgeon ended up spending several hours "cleaning up and operating" on him.

"So instead of going home to put my Christmas tree up and happily finish the year off, relaxing at home, I flew directly back to Los Angeles, after all my work in New York was done, and went directly from LAX airport, to surgery," he wrote.

Julian went on to credit Dr. Mauricio for "saving my life", as she also diagnosed and operated on a mole on his head four years ago.

"The operation was a success, but we have yet to have the results of the biopsy, which we may not receive before Christmas," the 61-year-old continued. "One can never be too confident in circumstances like this, but we all believe that Dr Tim has saved the day... So finger's crossed for now (sic)."

To conclude his post, Julian urged fans to see their doctor if they have any health concerns.

"I just want to say, this is also a timely reminder to all, to please get yourself checked out by your doctor... It only takes a short while to do so, and you may just be saving your own life, at the end of the day... so please, for the sake of yourself, your family and friends just go to your Dr and do what must be done... I love life and I want to live for a very long time and this is one way, and a choice, that could determine your future," he added.
