Billy Ray Cyrus has spoken out about his disastrous performance at President Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony.

The country singer, who took the stage to perform at the Liberty Ball festivities in Washington, DC, was roundly mocked for his appearance, but has come out swinging.

"I wouldn't have missed the honour of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not," he said in a statement to People magazine.

"I was there because President Donald J Trump invited me. I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night and I've learned through all these years when the producer says, 'You're on,' you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell. I was there for the people and we had a blast. That's called rock n roll!"

Nelly, Jason Aldean, Gavin DeGraw, Lee Greenwood, Kid Rock and the Village People also performed throughout the inauguration events.

At one point during the Monday night show, a frustrated Cyrus conceded he was losing interest in continuing to perform.

"Y'all want me to sing more or you just want me to get the hell off the stage?" he asked the crowd. "I don't give a damn."

Cyrus' slot wasn't the only one mired by technical difficulties. Carrie Underwood had to perform America the Beautiful a cappella when her backing tape failed to load.
