She also opens up on what to expect from her upcoming album, being inspired by the dance music played in her DJ sets and recalls some of the most nerve-wracking moments from her DJ sets to date.
Melanie C on her fitness journey and what inspired her Apple Music DJ Fitness Mix…
I have been a fitness fanatic for most of my life and I've gone through many different relationships with exercise. I've loved it, I've hated it, I've competed, I've done it for fun, and now it's just a part of my life that I'll have forever. So it was really interesting to think about how I wanted to curate it, how I wanted the flow and the dynamic of the set to be. And because I've been out DJing all last summer and for the last few years, there were some bangers I knew had to be on there, things that really get me going. And then just some really fun iconic moments. Of course, getting a bit of Spice [Girls] in there was really important. Literally it was meant for Sporty Spice to curate a mix like this.
Melanie C on 30 years since ‘Wannabe’s release and a Spice Girls reunion…
It's got to be, there has to be something befitting of 30 years since ‘Wannabe’. Once a Spice Girl, always a Spice Girl. We all feel like that, but we now are getting together because we know if we're going to do anything, we have to start planning things to get things right. We have to start making the plans right now and putting them into action. So fingers crossed. I think me and Mel B are probably going to be going in there all guns blazing. "Come on! It's time!"
Melanie C on finding DJing more nerve wracking than singing and past set mishaps…
I think it's always going to be DJing. I think because I still feel really new to it and it's technical. There are so many things that can go wrong and I'm still learning. I think with everything, you always continue to learn, but I feel so experienced as a singer in that sense, going out with a band and I'm in a different head space so if something goes wrong, I can kind of have a bit of a laugh about it. But if something goes wrong on the decks, I'm like, "Help! Loop Loop!" Everyone has those little habits and techniques, don't they? I kind of flick my hand up when I use the mixer and I've definitely seen buttons fly. It's like you've got your torch on your phone and you're on the floor trying to find the buttons!
Melanie C on what to expect with her upcoming album and working with artists such as Rose Gray and Uffie…
It's been such a beautiful experience. I've been working with lots of my old pals, people you would've seen in other records, and Spice Girls records like Biff Stannard, Bryn Christopher, got back in the room with Bill and Ted, which is really good fun. Then I've met lots of lovely new artists as well. I've been working with some female artists, Rose Gray, who's a new artist who's brilliant. We worked together with Uffie, who's great. It's so lovely to get more women on the record … I'm a pop artist, but I love my dance music. I love so many genres of music, but right now DJing, I'm super inspired by that and I really want to bring my work as a DJ and my solo work as an artist a bit closer together. So we're going to have some fun remixes. There's going to be some bops and I'm really excited to get it out there.
