Cyndi Lauper was forced to give up her vegan diet after developing painful kidney stones.

During an interview for the Table Manners with Jessie & Lennie Ware podcast on Wednesday, the Time After Time hitmaker explained that she attempted to abide by a plant-based diet for a time.

Cyndi recalled how she signed up to a food delivery service to provide her with vegan meals, however, the plan to eat more vegetables quickly backfired.

"I tried to be a vegan, but you know, I took one thing where they were just delivering food and they gave me spinach every day, every meal spinach. I wound up having kidney stones and they killed me," she declared.

Co-host Lennie then asked Cyndi how eating spinach causes kidney stones.

"Yes, it has a chemical in it. If you eat too much of this kind of thing. And you're prone to that it can you can develop kidney stones," the 71-year-old continued.

Spinach is a high-oxalate food, which has been linked to the formation of kidney stones, or a hard mass of minerals and salts that form in the kidneys.

Elsewhere, Cyndi shared that she tries to eat a balanced diet whenever she's on tour, and she has specific requirements about how her vegetables are prepared.

"I stopped that but like I tried to eat on the road like that but they would put these herbs and vegetables like, you know, just flat out what's wrong with you got cauliflower. What you gotta ruin it for? Just freaking wash it, cut it, put a little olive oil on it, some salt, put it in the broiler, don't burn it," she added.

Cyndi is currently in the U.K. for her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour.
