Zayn Malik pays an emotional tribute to One Direction on the anniversary of his departure.
The singer performed at the Palacio De Los Deportes in Mexico City, Mexico, on Tuesday as part of his debut solo tour, Stairway to the Sky.
Zayn kicked off his 18-song set list with a rendition of One Direction's 2014 hit Night Changes.
The 32-year-old originally performed the emotional ballad with his former bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Liam Payne, the latter of whom tragically died in October last year.
The musician became visibly emotional as he sang the song, with the crowd cheering and joining in.
"It's the first time I sang that song in 10 years," Zayn told the audience, according to a video shared on social media. "Thank you, that was f**king amazing. I almost cried at one point. This is insane."
The PillowTalk hitmaker's performance came almost 10 years to the day after he quit the British boy band to pursue a solo career. It was also the first time he has performed a One Direction song since leaving the group.
In a statement released in March 2015, Zayn explained his departure from the band, saying, "My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band."
He added that he wanted to be a "normal 22-year-old" and focus on having some time "out of the spotlight".
Meanwhile, the remaining members - Harry, Louis, Niall and Liam - continued as a band until they went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
Zayn kicked off his tour in Leeds, England, on 23 November and will wrap up in Mexico City on Friday.
