Zayn Malik was forced to cancel his final tour date in Mexico City on Friday night after coming down with "severe food poisoning".

The former One Direction star was set to wrap up his Stairway to the Sky Tour with a third night at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico on Friday. However, he took to Instagram before the show to announce its cancellation.

"I'm heartbroken to say that I won't be able to perform tonight in Mexico City. I've been really sick since this morning and despite trying everything to push through, my body just isn't allowing it. I'm so sorry to let you down," the 32-year-old wrote on his Stories.

"The love and energy I always feel from my fans means the world to me, and it hurts deeply to miss this moment with you. Thank you for your understanding, and please know I'm sending all my love to each of you."

The Pillowtalk singer later divulged more details about his illness, revealing that food poisoning was "no joke".

"Mexico, I love you even though myself and many of my crew got severe food poisoning... it's no joke - still struggling," he penned.

Zayn concluded his message by thanking his fans for their support throughout his tour.

"To my fans, I'm so sorry - these shows have made me feel alive, happy, grateful & at home and that's all because of you," he praised. "These shows, your energy, your fan projects... filled me with so much love and with a feeling I can't even describe. Big love."

The Stairway to the Sky Tour, Zayn's first solo trek across the U.K. and North America, kicked off in Leeds, England on 23 November.

It was in support of his fourth studio album, Room Under the Stairs.
