Gwenno has officially announced her much-anticipated fourth solo album, Utopia, set for release on July 11th via Heavenly Recordings. Following the critical acclaim of 2022’s Tresor—which earned her a Mercury Prize nomination—Utopia promises a bold shift in language, tone, and creative direction.
Leading the announcement is the dazzling new single “Dancing On Volcanoes,” accompanied by a monochrome video shot in Las Vegas. With pulsing motorik beats and shimmering guitars reminiscent of The Smiths, the track celebrates the liberating chaos of dancing through the night. It’s a song Gwenno describes as cathartic—a nod to club culture, personal transformation, and the spirit of losing yourself in music.
“Jarvis Cocker dancing alone in dry ice, Le Mandela in Cardiff at 5am, the Pet Shop Boys, Johnny Marr... it’s all here,” she says of the track. “It’s about the need to dance—and what it frees in us.”
Utopia marks Gwenno’s first album predominantly in English, capturing an expansive 25-year journey through her life, from teenage nights out in Vegas to creative rebirth in Wales. It’s an album steeped in memory, identity, and the wild beauty of self-discovery. With contributions from Cate Le Bon and H. Hawkline, and a mix of floor-fillers and piano ballads, Gwenno explores themes of motherhood, migration, and artistic awakening.
Far from her early days in The Pipettes or even the folk-futurism of Le Kov, Utopia is deeply personal—written mostly on piano and recorded live in her living room with long-time collaborator Rhys Edwards. It captures moments of chaos, healing, and clarity with rare poetic insight.
Gwenno will also be bringing Utopia to stages across the UK, with upcoming live shows in London, Salford, Cardiff, and more, including a headline performance at EartH in London on October 31st.
Utopia is available to pre-order now. For Gwenno, this record is a love letter to the messy, magical in-between spaces that shape who we become.
