Robbie Williams has revealed he was diagnosed with a "17th century pirate disease" after he "stopped eating".

The Take That star has opened up about being diagnosed with scurvy after taking an appetite suppressant drug to lose weight.

Scurvy, a condition caused by not getting enough vitamin C over a long period due to a poor diet, can lead to symptoms such as tiredness, irritability, weakness, easily bruised skin, muscle aches and more, according to the NHS.

In a recent interview with the Mirror, Robbie described scurvy as a "17th century pirate disease" and explained that after taking the appetite suppressant, he "stopped eating and I wasn't getting nutrients".

The 51-year-old then admitted he didn't realise his drastic weight loss was a serious problem at the time.

"With body dysmorphia, when people say they're worried about how you're looking, you're like: 'I've achieved it.'" Robbie said. "When people say: 'we're worried you're too thin' that goes into my head as 'jackpot. I've reached the promised land.'"

Elsewhere in the interview, the hitmaker - who was diagnosed with depression in his twenties - revealed he recently struggled with certain mental health issues for the first time in "a very, very long time".

He added, "I was sad, I was anxious, I was depressed."

As well as depression, the Angels singer has also battled anxiety, agoraphobia and addiction.

"It's been about ten years...I thought I was at the other end of the arc," the star told the outlet. "I thought this was the end of my story, and that I would just go walking into this marvellous wonderland. So for it to return was just confusing."

Robbie noted that since improving his diet, his mental health has also begun to improve.
