Marcus Mumford has explained why his wife, Carey Mulligan, told him to get out of their house.

The 38-year-old Mumford & Sons singer has been married to three-time Oscar-nominated star Mulligan, 39, since 2012 and they share three children together.

Mumford & Sons have made a triumphant return to the music scene this year as their fifth studio album, Rushmere, topped the UK charts after being released in March.

But it seems Mumford was hit by writer's block for months as he struggled to compose lyrics for the title track - prompting Mulligan to take drastic action.

The singer-songwriter told the Zach Sang Show podcast, "My wife kicked me out of the house. She was like, 'You are driving yourself and me, by the way, insane. You have got to go somewhere and be away from home to be an artist for a few days.'"

He continued, "So I went to Istanbul and I sat in a cafe for three days and drank coffee, smoked cigars and wrote poetry like a p***k.

"I allowed myself to go away and be an artist for a few days and then the Rushmere lyrics came."

The move paid off, as Rushmere has rocketed up the album charts in countries around the world - as well as charting higher in the UK than their last album, 2018's Delta, which only reached number 2.
