BIG SPECIAL, the dynamic Black Country duo comprising Joe Hicklin and Callum Moloney, have today released a surprise new album, NATIONAL AVERAGE., out now on SO Recordings. The album's arrival follows a series of intriguing projections of its artwork across prominent London landmarks, including The Tate Modern and Buckingham Palace, teasing fans in the days leading up to the unexpected drop.

This swift follow-up to last year's acclaimed UK Top 40 debut, POSTINDUSTRIAL HOMETOWN BLUES, sees BIG SPECIAL wasting no time. Alongside the new album, they have also unveiled a video for the lead single, 'GOD SAVE THE PONY.' The band is also set to embark on a series of UK in-store performances, commencing tonight.

Since their emergence, BIG SPECIAL have carved out a distinct sound characterized by a blend of existential themes, poetic lyrics, soulful vocals, and hard-hitting punk elements. Their rapid ascent has included significant tours and festival headline slots. During this period, Hicklin and Moloney found the time to write NATIONAL AVERAGE., a record that retains their signature intensity while expanding their sound to incorporate elements of funk. The album delves into themes of brotherhood and navigating life's changes, both significant and minor, all filtered through their characteristic dark humour and raw honesty.

Commenting on the new single, lead singer Joe Hicklin stated, "'GOD SAVE THE PONY.' is about the stones we carry. The different things that pull people down; the invisible weights that they have to drag through their everyday." He elaborated on the album's focus, explaining, "‘NATIONAL AVERAGE.’ is an album about the multitudes of a normal life as it begins to change. It’s about personal and political problems remaining the same as a life changes around them and they all begin to weave together."

While POSTINDUSTRIAL HOMETOWN BLUES explored desperation and hope, NATIONAL AVERAGE. progresses these emotions, confronting confusion with determination and a sardonic smile. The album embarks on an emotional exploration of self and societal critique, recognizing shared struggles across individual experiences.

Fans can now stream NATIONAL AVERAGE. and watch the video for 'GOD SAVE THE PONY.' BIG SPECIAL's in-store performances begin tonight, with further tour dates scheduled throughout 2025 and 2026.
