Richard Hughes, the drummer of the hugely popular British band Keane, will join pupils from Harris Academy Crystal Palace to launch Amnesty International’s new education pack, entitled A Matter of Life and Death, on Monday 11 October at 11.40am – a day after the World Day Against the Death Penalty.
The pack is Amnesty’s flagship education resource and focuses on the death penalty – a topic Richard Hughes cares passionately about and has campaigned on.
The pack contains a script for a short play, presentations and lesson plans to inspire young people – aged 14 plus – to learn more about real events around the world and real people facing the reality of the death penalty.
It also includes films featuring Jeremy Irons, Sister Helen Prejean and Mirza Hussain, a British man who spent 18 years on death row in Pakistan.
They day will begin with an introduction from Michael McCann, the head of social sciences at Harris Academy Crystal Palace. It will be followed by a lesson from the pack with pupils from the school, then speeches from Richard Hughes and Amnesty International’s head of campaigns, Tom Fyans, and end with an open question and answer session.
