Lenny Kravitz needs “quiet” moments to himself at times to “decompress”.
The 47-year-old musician crafted his recently released album Black and White America for over two years. During this time period Lenny isolated himself from his hectic life as a rock star. Spending lots of time reflecting on his life provided Lenny with inspiration.
“Keeping myself secluded, living in my trailer for two years, on the beach, and just really being quiet [inspired me],” Lenny told Us Weekly. “I wasn't doing that for the album, I was doing that for myself, for my life, because I needed time to just decompress and feel myself again.”
Without the stresses of life bearing down on him, Lenny wrote his album easily. The songs seemed to flow naturally.
“The music just came out in such an easy way. I dreamt half the album,” Lenny explained. “I would wake up with songs in my head or in the middle of the night, being out in the nature like that, you just hear music constantly.”
When Lenny is not dreaming up music he is focusing his energy on his 22-year-old daughter Zoë Kravitz. The young actress has been getting work in recent years, including a role in this year’s major Hollywood film X-Men: First Class. Lenny is incredibly proud of Zoë and it thrills him to see her doing well.
“I am so happy for her, and not just because she is successful but she is doing what she loves and she works hard,” Lenny gushed. “She has a fantastic work ethic, and to see it is wonderful. [I]t's just amazing to see her doing well.”
Lenny’s new album Black and White America is now in stores.
