Kevin Costner doesn’t understand why it’s so “shocking” for him to pursue a music career.

The Hollywood star is the singer in Kevin Costner & Modern West, a country rock band. Kevin formed the group with encouragement from his wife Christine and they released their second album Turn It On last year.

The star loves writing and performing songs, and finds it frustrating when people say he should stick to acting.

“It shouldn’t be shocking. If you grow up wanting to perform, music is so much a part of that,” he said in an interview with UK TV show Daybreak. “It is only other people that would limit somebody to think that they can’t do that. Because we certainly don’t limit musicians from coming into the movie industry.”

Kevin accepts he won’t win everyone over with his music. Even though he was singing before he became known as an actor, people remain sceptical.

The 56-year-old star insists he remains committed to making music.

“You get in trouble when you pretend to be anything. If you get caught pretending as an adult it’s not very attractive,” he replied when asked about the transition from actor to musician. “I think in life you don’t try to convince anyone of anything. The idea is to follow your heart, follow how you feel as a person.”

Kevin went on to reveal he has been writing songs for many years.

He hopes his fans will accept he has a passion for both music and movies.

“I wouldn’t say this music is a different side to me. A lot of these songs were written during the making of my movies,” he added. “So when people think of my movies they have one thought, when I think of my movies a lot of times I think of them in terms of, ‘Oh my daughter was born on this movie,’ or, ‘My son was born during this movie.’ So I can map my life with my movies.”
