Sir Paul McCartney says performing live is like a “boxing match”.
The former Beatle has had a successful year after selling out gigs all over the world and singing at the White House. The 69-year-old has just announced that he will be releasing a new album in 2012 – and thrives on keeping busy.
"People often say to me, 'You must be knackered' but actually it's invigorating I wouldn't have thought that.” He told British publication The Sun.
"In actual fact it is energizing. It is knackering but I always liken it to a heavyweight boxing match. The guy who wins might get smacked about a bit but when he gets up the next day he still feels good.”
The star confessed that creating his new album, which includes guest artists such as Stevie Wonder and Eric Clapton, came to him very naturally.
However, if he ever felt a little bit stuck he would think about his late band mate John Lennon for inspiration.
“Sometimes when I am writing I look back and wonder what John would do, particularly with a sticky point if I think I'm going down the wrong track,” he explained.
"What would we do if we were clever? I would think, stop. OK, what might we do here? And sometimes it can give you a bit of a clue.”
Paul is looking forward to spending the Christmas holidays with his new wife Nancy Shevell and grandchildren.
He doesn’t want any big presents over the holiday.
"All I want for Christmas is a pair of black socks, ankle length,” he smiled. “It's true."
