USA music sales increase 3.1% in 2012

Music sales have registered at 3.1% increase in the USA for 2012, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

American’s made 1,661,000,000 music transactions in 2012, up from 1,611,000,000 transactions in the previous year.

Digital album sales were up 14.1% to 118 million although CD album sales dropped 13.5% to 193 million.

Americans purchased 316 million albums in 2012. That was down 4.4%.

The biggest selling album of 2012 was Adele ‘21’ with just over 4.4 million sales. Number two was Taylor Swift ‘Red’ with 3.1 million sales.

‘Red’ was also the fastest selling album of the year with 1,208,000 sold in the first week. That made it the fastest selling album since The Eminem Show sold 1,322,000 back in 2002.
