Eminem says he is tortured by “the kind of demons” that only fame can bring.
The 41-year-old Rap God musician became a superstar after the release of his 1999 album The Slim Shady LP.
And the star confesses his overnight international celebrity remains a source of great anxiety for him.
“Obviously now I know I’m famous. In my head, those are the kind of demons that I fight against, like ‘f**k, man, how famous am I? I shouldn’t say this, I shouldn’t say that’,” he told Rolling Stone magazine.
Eminem revealed during his cover interview with the publication that he relapsed on narcotics and alcohol several times throughout his career.
The rapper thinks a lot of his problems derived from being in the spotlight, as he craved solitude more than anything else.
“I’m not saying I wouldn’t have become an addict if I never got famous… It was more about ‘I need this onstage – I can’t handle this many people looking at me,’” he admitted.
“I always joke that it’s a hell of a career choice for somebody that doesn’t really like attention.”
Eminem is rumoured to have secretly reunited with his ex-wife Kim Mathers, whom he famously fantasised about killing in his 2000 song Kim.
When asked about whether or not he regrets writing about his family, the musician reveals he has professionally matured a great deal.
“Sh*t. Hindsight is 20/20,” he said.
“At the time, that was how I dealt with things. I didn’t really think about the consequences or what was right or wrong.
“Sometimes, I feel, maybe I did give people too much, let people in too much, said so much personal sh*t that I wish I didn’t.”
Eminem and Kim share 17-year-old daughter Hailie together and the couple have divorced twice.
