Florence Welch has credited drunken toilet singing to launching her career.
The 28-year-old frontwoman’s band Florence + the Machine has achieved international acclaim since the release of their 2009 debut album Lungs.
And before shooting to fame, Florence caught the attention of her current manager Mairead Nash while out partying in a nightclub.
"I went to one of Mairead's club nights and we were in the toilet talking about boys or something, and I was pretending that I had a band," Florence revealed to Nick Grimshaw on MTV UK’s show Relentless Ultra Presents Soundchain.
"I was basically fronting, I was no band, at all! I sang a snippet of an Etta James song. I was like 'I can sing!!' I was pretty drunk..."
But it seems the environment was beneficial for Florence in unexpected ways, as her voice reverberated off the walls of the loo.
Also, after the incident took place, Florence discovered she shared a strange connection with Etta she didn’t know existed.
"But toilets have really good acoustics, and I found out that Etta James sang to her manager in a toilet as well!" the singer exclaimed.
Florence + the Machine have recently released new album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. And Florence told British newspaper The Guardian recently penning songs for the record was therapeutic for her.
“The problem is that I’m not very good at saying how I feel, in person,” she said. “When you’re a performer, you want to make people feel good. And when you do that on such a grand scale … when your feelings are difficult, smaller and more domestic, you’re just like: ‘I have no idea how that is said. Do you want me to sing it?’ I can go and sing it to loads of strangers, but this kind of … the intensity of actual day-to-day intimacy …”
