One Direction’s career break was entirely predictable because of the intense pressure they’re under, according to Simon Le Bon.
The British boy band’s fans went into meltdown last month after they confirmed they are taking a hiatus. Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan have insisted this isn’t the end of the group, and Duran Duran star Simon can’t entirely see why they need time out of the limelight.
“I'm not surprised in the slightest. That is so normal. That was so predictable. It's the fact they work every b****y day. The pressure on them is so great, something had to break. I think it's a good decision. Good luck to them all – they've worked so hard,” he told People.
Having been in his band for over 30 years, Simon is well-placed to give advice to younger artists. Duran Duran released their 14th record, Paper Gods, last week, and Simon is proud that they are still experimenting with their sound. This time around that means causing raised eyebrows with at least one of their collaborators – Lindsay Lohan.
“I've known Lindsay for years and years and years. I met her in New York when we were both appearing on the Regis and Kelly show, believe it or not, so we stayed in contact in a relaxed way,” he explained. “She texted me, and I said, ‘Well, I'll try and find a slot for you.’ And then [track] Dancephobia came up. We really needed something special for that little space in that song, and Lindsay delivered 100 per cent.”
Lindsay has been marred in controversy over the years thanks to her multiple stints in jail and rehab. She’s now got her life back together, completing a successful stint on the stage in London play Speed-the-Plow last year. Simon remains a fan of hers, due to rather than in spite of what she’s been through.
“What's it brought to the album? It has brought a little controversy. She polarises people, Lindsay – doesn't she? She's very special. I'm really proud that we've got her on it,” he enthused.
