With it’s barbed lyrics floating across a dreamy soundscape of southern blues and laced with the playful psychedelic pop of Animal Collective and The Beatles, 'We Can’t Hear You Sing’ is a left-handed diss track that manages to both scorn “The devil threw you a violin, And so you’ll play what’s left of you" and caress at the same time.
The single marries Dan’s love of Tool, Pink Floyd, Radiohead and The Mars Volta to his unique singing voice, which he uses almost as another instrument; “I don’t think of my voice as typically ‘nice’ sounding”, he says, "I try to use it in different ways to compliment the song. It helps make the music mine”.
A NYC based producer, composer, mixing engineer and guitarist working across an array of musical genres, Dan Barracuda regularly provides his services to artists from around the world, and is passionate about bringing songs to life, seeking to realize not only his clients’ musical visions but also his own. He has released four albums and a string of singles to date, often adding an ethnic flair to his catalog with an eclectic array of guest musicians and instruments such as sitar, tabla, Bansuri flute, cello, sarangi, handpan, and charango, which he mixes with more contemporary, progressive elements to create his distinctive sound.
Born into a Peruvian family, Dan got the musical calling at the age of 13 when he got his first guitar and never looked back. Now, nearly 20 years on, practicing Stoicism and meditating every morning, he is also a composer of film scores and guitar pieces for sync. Since 2007 he has created over 3,000 song ideas and riffs on guitar, piano, bass and vocals, turning these ideas into fully produced songs on his albums, scores for a film or short video clips which he shares with his followers.
Co-founder of acoustic duo Ian & Dan and full band project Jester & Sage, Dan moved to NYC just prior to the pandemic where he found himself in lockdown with his musical partner Ian for over a year and a half. Retaining his sanity by delving "extremely deeply into mixing and production” and after years spent building a network of clients, Dan now also works for TORS, thriving on collaborating and sharing ideas with different artists “the relationships with artists is what it’s all about. I love people (almost) as much as I love music!"
With its enigmatic blend of psychedelia, darkness, and honesty, ‘We Can’t Hear You Sing’ is inspired by a real event that took place exactly a year before the single's release and manages to attone rage and conflict with an inner spirituality, reflected in the song’s closing lines “And one day I’ll Thank you, One Day I’ll Thank You”.
‘We Can’t Hear You Sing’The devil works to understand
All that lies within a man
So take care not to let him see
The broken core of all your tragedies
The broken core now
Outer tears and louder cries
Is there nothing you can hide?
Digging deep to rectify
But that was just a dream that passed you by
That was just a dream that passed you by
We can’t hear you sing
The devil threw you a violin
And so you’ll play what’s left of you
A tune you’ll steal but that will have to do
And one day I’ll thank you
One day I’ll thank you
