With Croydon now confirmed as the ‘London Borough of Culture 2023’, PRS for Music are proud to honour The BRIT School with a prestigious Heritage Award as part of the culmination of the BRIT School’s 30th anniversary celebrations. The BRIT School is renowned for nurturing illustrious musical careers of Adele, FKA Twigs, Black Midi, Leona Lewis, King Krule, Kae Tempest, among many others.

The accolade recognises institutions which have played a crucial role in the UK music landscape. Previous PRS Heritage Awards have honoured grassroot venues that helped Queen, Madness, Elton John, Dire Straits, Jarvis Cocker, Spandau Ballet, UB40, Status Quo, Blur and many more at the start of their musical careers.

PRS Member and BRIT School graduate Dan Gillespie Sells (The Feeling) says, “Hello to everyone at the BRIT School, congratulations on your PRS Award. It is really wonderful as PRS members’ and also ex-BRIT people, we met at the BRIT School, we started playing there 20 blah blah blah…..years ago. We are still working together, still touring together, still making records together after all these years. It means a lot, after all those foyer concerts and all of those the amazing gigs that we use to do at the BRIT School when we were 16, we are still doing that now. PRS are giving you an award for all that amazing live work that you do down there, so lots of love from us, always BRIT. See you soon, we love you.”

PRS member and BRIT School graduate Polly Scattergood (Mute) says, “Congratulations to The BRIT School on being awarded the PRS for Music Heritage Award. It is such an incredible place that you have built over the last 30 years. I am so proud to have studied with you. Thank you to PRS and BRIT School for investing in the musicians and artists of the future – here’s to 30 more years!”

PRS member and recent graduate Young Athena says, “Excited to congratulate the BRIT School for receiving the PRS for Music Heritage Award for excellence in music and art. Congratulations to the BRIT School, this is so deserved and is absolutely incredible. It’s so great to see PRS and the BRIT School working together and I am so so proud to be a BRIT alumni. Once again, congratulations.”

PRS for Music CEO, Andrea Czapary Martin says, “PRS proudly supports emerging artists, songwriters and composers throughout their careers through education, mentoring and partnerships. The opportunity to support a school that has a strong vision to nurture and develop young people for the music industry, is an honour for us. PRS Members’ Council Chair, Nigel Elderton says, “There are a multitude of barriers faced by young people who want to pursue music and the creative arts. I believe the work that the BRIT School do in ensuring that these barriers are broken, is a testament to their unique educational approach, that focusses on the individual”.

The BRIT School Principal, Stuart Worden says “This is a great moment in our 30th Anniversary year. PRS for Music have always believed in this school, and we have benefited from their advice and help. It has been a real joy to see the school grows and grows and make such an impact on the world of music, and all creative industries. Here’s to 30 more.”
