Miss Mac and her Music students at Woodcroft College, South Australia, were saddened by the tragic passing of Taylor Hawkins earlier this year and wanted to do something special in his memory.

Music at Woodcroft is special. The music students call themselves a Music Family. Music is about bringing people together and we perform for fun, learning all styles of music and specialising in ‘old bangers’ to entertain audiences.

In 2019, UK artists along with International superstars Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins recorded an acoustic cover of their piece Times Like These (BBC Radio 1) from their homes during COVID-19 quarantine. At Woodcroft College we love a challenge and finding ways to bring our Music Family together and thought we could re-create this piece.

Inaugural ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Renée McCarthy (Miss Mac) reached out to Old Scholars to get involved and they were happy to take part. Brodie, Liam and Joaquin (Old Scholars) recorded the backline at a local studio and we recorded our students individually at school over two weeks. This is the first time that we have undertaken a special project like this. Our video was premiered at our annual Showcase on Friday 12 August and was debuted on radio (Mix102.3) on Friday 18 August, which was the first time our students had heard their performance. Their video, shared on Facebook, by Mix102.3 has reached several countries with thousands of views in a matter of days. We hope you love their tribute to Taylor!
