Earlier this year, London-based Nigerian artist Obongjayar released his highly anticipated debut album ‘Some Nights I Dream Of Doors’ (via September Recordings). Years in the making, the record birthed a flurry of totemic singles including ‘Message In A Hammer’, ‘Try’ and ‘Tinko Tinko (Don’t Play Me for a Fool)’. Today, Thursday 15th September, sees the release of a brand new video and remix package for stand out track ‘Sugar’.
The surreal video sees Obongjayar creatively partner with director Aidan Zamiri, (known for his works for FKA Twigs, Caroline Polachek and Rex Orange County) to create a visual that sees a live performance of the song take an unexpected, absurdist turn, confusing and upsetting the assembled audience. Speaking further about the video OB writes;
“The video is an absurd love child born from mine and Aiden’s minds. I think it signifies my work and how it’s seen - and how I carry on through love”
Alongside the release of the video, today also sees Sugar receive two brand new remixes - taking the track in opposing directions. Firstly, Rinse FM's Vigro Deep adds an amapiano spin to the track using Obongjayar's original vocals layered with a myriad of percussive instrumental samples. Next, Berlin based DJ & Producer Sally C creates a bright remix primed for dancefloors, with broken beat drum grooves and vibrant synths.
